Free Public Legal Info Session - The Rule of Law: Why it Matters and Why it is More Important Than Ever

Time: 6:00 p.m.
Location: Charlottetown Library Learning Centre (Rotary Auditorium)
June 3, 2026 – 6:00 PM

Join the Law Society of Prince Edward Island for a free public legal information session with Aidan Sheridan on the rule of law and its importance in Canada and on Prince Edward Island.

The “rule of law” can sound abstract, but it affects everyone. It means that laws should be public, fair, and applied equally, and that no one — including governments, institutions, and people in positions of power — is above the law.

At a time when the rule of law is facing pressure around the world, understanding what it means is more important than ever. The rule of law helps protect rights, limit the misuse of power, support fair decision-making, and maintain public trust in courts, governments, and democratic institutions.

This free session will explain the rule of law in plain language and explore why it matters to Islanders. Participants will learn how the rule of law connects to everyday life, public institutions, democracy, rights, accountability, and the justice system we all rely on.

No legal background is required. This session is for anyone who wants to better understand one of the core principles that helps keep our society fair, free, and democratic.

Aidan Sheridan is a former Crown Prosecutor and tried cases in all courts in PEI. He is also a former senior officer with the Office of the Judge Advocate General, the legal branch of the Canadian Forces and has both prosecuted and defended cases within the CF discipline system. He is also a part-time Judicial Justice of the Peace.

This session free to attend. However, space is limited, so we do ask that participants register in advance.

Please register here or by calling our office at 902-566-1666.
