Member Certificates
CERTIFICATE OF STANDING
Members who are applying for membership in another jurisdiction or for various other applications may be required to provide a Certificate of Standing from their home jurisdiction along with their application. A Certificate of Standing confirms the following information:
- Date of Admission;
- Present Status with the Law Society;
- Discipline Record (complaints, competency, formal disciplinary proceedings, custodianship/trusteeship, practice restrictions, claims on the Compensation Fund);
- Personal History (criminal proceedings, bankruptcy, judgments); and
- Any other relevant information that may affect your application for admission.
A fee for the Certificate of Standing will be charged.
CERTIFICATE OF NOTARY
A Certificate of Notary may be required for members who send correspondence to foreign governments and for organizations who will only accept a document notarized by a PEI lawyer. A Certificate of Notary confirms the following information:
- Name;
- Date of Admission;
- That you are a member of the Law Society of Prince Edward Island entitled to practise law in the Province of Prince Edward Island;
- That you are Notary Public for the Province Prince Edward Island.
There is no fee for a Certificate of Notary.
LETTER CONFIRMING STATUS
For all other situations that require proof of membership, the Law Society of Prince Edward Island can provide members with a letter confirming status. The letter confirms the following information:
- Name;
- Date of Admission;
- Present Status;
- That you are a member in good standing.
There is no fee for a Letter Confirming Status.
