The PEI Department of Justice & Public Safety in collaboration with the Law Society of PEI are providing the Workshop: Family Violence Training for Lawyers. This family violence training will be relevant to family law lawyers and criminal lawyers. Jayelee Grady, Manager Victim Services will provide family violence training for lawyers in the morning with topics including:
• Family violence/types of family violence
• Impact of family violence
• Myths and stereotypes about family violence
• Understanding barriers to leaving an abusive relationship
• Overview of resources on the Island and of what might be appropriate in various situations (for both victims and perpetrators of violence)
• Review of risk factors and risk mitigation strategies
In the afternoon following lunch,
Jayelee Grady,
Leslie Collins, Children's Lawyer (Acting) and
Ryan Moss, Stewart McKelvey will deliver a panel presentation about protection orders and orders restraining harassment in the family law context, specifically:
· Emergency Protection Orders;
· Victim Assistance Orders; and
· Orders restraining harassment under the Children’s Law Act
Discussion topics will include:
· Relevant legislation
· Procedure for obtaining and varying an Emergency Protection Order
· Evolution of family violence-related protections in PEI
