Mid-Winter Meetings & Professional Development Day

The Law Society of Prince Edward Island will be hosting its annual Mid-Winter Meetings, Professional Development and Presidents' Dinner on Friday, February 7, 2025, at the Delta Prince Edward hotel, Charlottetown.

The Joint Continuing Legal Education Committee of the Law Society of PEI and Canadian Bar Association PEI Branch announce the professional development sessions for the Mid-Winter Meetings.
1.     Plenary – Plain Language for Effective and Efficient Communication.  Emma Chilton, a communications consultant specializing in making technical information accessible to the public, will address common myths about plain language and include examples that participants can draw on for their day-to-day work.

2.     Break Out Sessions
I.            Plain Language Practice Specific Sessions (3) will feature sample legal writing from commonly used legal documents for the relevant area of law. With the support of a “plain language coach,” participants will discuss how language use impacts the efficacy of legal writing and provide plain language options for use in day-to-day practice. 
  1. Family – Cindy Cameron, Matthew Walters, & Jenny Mason
  2. Estates – Robin Aitken, Cynthia Taylor & Jessica Gillis
  3. Corporate/Commercial – Andrew Sapiano, Donald Cameron & Emma Chilton
Content shared in each of the practice specific sessions will be shared with all registered CLE participants.

 II.           Climate Hazard & Risk Information System - Representatives from the Government of Prince Edward Island will demonstrate CHRIS (Climate Hazard & Risk Information System), a comprehensive GIS- and web-based tool that allows the general public and decision-makers to explore climate hazards and information for Prince Edward Island. This session will also include discussion regarding disclosure of coastal hazard information for property sales, rental leases, and tourism establishments.
 
3. Persuasive Writing – Justice Thomas P. Laughlin, Prince Edward Island Court of Appeal, and Justice Jonathan M. Coady, Supreme Court of Prince Edward Island, will share their insights on the keys to effective persuasive writing.
